How it all began...
Annutto’s Farm Stand, LLC
In 1950, a 250-acre Truck Farm was purchased by Tony Annutto, Sr., his wife and five children. The family started to farm right away growing massive amounts of corn, tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, squash, and much more. Not long after they began farming, the A & P Supermarket approached them about buying fresh vegetables. They ended up supplying A & P Supermarkets and Chicago Markets in upstate New York along with several other businesses. In 1955, they started to build retail greenhouses on the farm growing hanging baskets, vegetable and flower plants. Eventually, they ended up with 20 greenhouses. In those days, greenhouses were rarely seen in Upstate New York.
In 1972, the middle son, Tony Jr., started a farm market and greenhouse retail operation on Caroline Street in Herkimer, NY, called T & J’s Produce. A fire in 1976 totally destroyed the business and greenhouses. In the same year, Tony rebuilt the entire business. He sold the business in 1984 to his brother-in-law.
In 1984, Tony, Jr. had an opportunity to buy a farm market in Oneonta, NY. He and his two daughters, Debra and Michele, began operating Annutto’s Farm Stand, LLC. Many changes have occurred over the years. They have added greenhouses, a cider mill, bakery, and a full-fledged garden center and farm market. The business is still growing with new product lines and ideas. In 1999, another farm was purchased in East Herkimer, NY by Tony Jr. Projects is underway for the development of another agricultural business.
After several years of working with her dad at the farm stand, Tony made his eldest daughter, Debbie, a co-owner of the business in 2004.
In 2006, the original Annutto Farm in Herkimer was sold to a developer. The land was zoned as commercial property and is now being developed. All the greenhouses were moved a quarter mile up the road to Gros Boulevard in East Herkimer, NY. Jim Annutto, Tony’s youngest brother is now operating the greenhouses.
